GENEVA,  Feb 20 – Unitaid launched a new call for proposals to help countries take advantage of provisions under global intellectual property rules that allow increased access to affordable medicines in order to safeguard public health.

In the context of the development of the UNITAID Strategy for 2017-2021, UNITAID launched an online consultation on its Strategy for 2017-2021. The process will be open until 31 October and aims at gathering feedback from countries and partners (technical, funding, implementing, civil society, and private sector) to ensure the new Strategy's fit with the needs and expectations of the global health community.

Geneva, 24 May - UNITAID announced a new initiative to support global efforts to end tuberculosis by 2035 by seeking to bring preventive treatments to people most likely to develop the disease.

NEW YORK AND GENEVA (April 20, 2016) – TB Alliance and the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) today announced a Memorandum of Understanding outlining a multi-pronged collaboration to encourage the development of new tuberculosis (TB) regimens and ensure their availability in low-and middle-income countries. The two organisations will work together on a range of initiatives, with a focus on public health-oriented licensing strategies and the sharing of intellectual property to spur research and development of affordable new TB treatments.

A new UNITAID study considers how to make essential medicines available and affordable to those in need. Drawing examples from intellectual-property issues in the treatment of HIV, hepatitis C, tuberculosis and cancer, the authors recommend various options that governments can take to lower prices and increase access to essential medicines.

GENEVA, 24 March - UNITAID today launched its latest call for funding proposals, focused on scaling up better tuberculosis (TB) treatment for children. Innovative approaches are being sought to ease adoption of new TB drugs and make them more accessible to children in need.

GENEVA, 18 March 2016 - UNITAID will invest in increasing access to improved and shorter treatments for drug-resistant tuberculosis; better tuberculosis treatment for children; and preventive therapy for populations at greatest risk of developing active tuberculosis disease.

The study explores how to separate the costs of research and development (R&D) from the future market price of vaccines, medicines and diagnostics – a concept known as “delinkage”.

Medication simplifies and improves treatment for 1 million children with TB; Medicines come in dispersible fixed-dose combinations at the correct dosages, tablets no longer need to be cut or crushed; These products can improve adherence and child survival from TB.
