UN approves five sanctions exemptions for humanitarian aid to North Korea

Approval sees return of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to North Korea after four-year absence.

MSF will join other organizations addressing the high occurrence of drug-resistant TB among the North Korean population, such as the Eugene Bell foundation and others who have also received UN exemptions in recent months.

According to the UN, MSF will be allowed to import items required for a “medical project which primarily aims at improving the diagnostic and treatment of TB as well as multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) among the population of North Hamgyong Province.”

The import will also allow MSF to address “urgent and general medical needs at the community-level,” specifically in Kyongsong County.
